245 Million Years Ago

Of the five extinction points in the Earth's history, this one is by far the worst. The middle of the five (the others are Ordovician: 438MYA (Million Years Ago), Devonian: 367MYA, Triassic-Jurassic: 208MYA, and Cretaceous-Tertiary: 65MYA).

Much marine life perishes in the greatest mass extinction. Trilobites are wiped out - few corals survive.

The place becomes quite barren. Scientists have no idea why this was the case, and there is no proof in the soil to help us figure this out either. A full recovery of biodiversity took between 10-100 million years.
